“Anybody know how water comes to our houses?” Andrew Turnbull, a foreman at the Water and Sewerage Department, asked a group of pre-schoolers on Friday.

The students from Paradise Daycare and Pre-school were participating in an observance of International Water Day at the Water and Sewerage Department in Baughers Bay.

“You see this unit right here?” Mr. Turnbull asked, referring to a large plastic pipe on a water supply system module. “This pipe here, this is normally underground. We dig down and attach pipes to it and this helps to bring water to your houses.”

The students also learned about other equipment.

“This unit here is called a water meter. You know, sometimes mommy and daddy pay the water bill?” Mr. Turnbull said. “When the water goes through here, these numbers turn, and that will determine how much money mommy and daddy will have to pay to Water and Sewerage Department.”

Throughout the ceremony, speakers encouraged the students and other attendees to conserve energy and water as much as they can.

“When we increase our demand on any of these resources, we increase the demand on the other,” said WSD Director Pearline Scatliffe-Leonard.

Water and energy conservation are key for survival, she added.

“Let us each pledge to conserve as much water and energy as we can,” Ms. Scatliffe-Leonard said. “There is an urgent need for us to change our habits for sustainability.”

This is the first time the territory is celebrating International Water Day, the director told attendees. The theme was “Water and Energy.”
The day, which was first observed internationally in 1993, is celebrated annually around the world on March 22.
