Ten-year-old Rashad Clarke admits that sitting at home watching television all day can get old sometimes. So far this summer, he hasn’t had much time for that. Rashad spent his Tuesday morning at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School learning how to weave a basket.

“This is fun and easy. It lets me be creative, and at the end I can have a place to keep my pencils — and it can also be a decoration,” he said.

Rashad is among about 400 children participating in the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports’ various summer programmes around the territory.

Despite missing his favourite television shows, Rashad said he’s having a good time so far.

“We get to do a lot of fun activities like arts and crafts and lots of P.E.,” he said.

The three-week DYAS programme is designed to keep students occupied during the summer, Violet de Castro said.
