A bit of Virgin Islands history came to the United Kingdom last month.

The Friends of the BVI and other guests watched 1940s film footage of the territory during a recent event at the BVI House in London.

The March 29 showing was the BVI London Office’s first “Friends Evening” programme this year, according to Government Information Services.

In a video message before the film, Premier Ralph O’Neal called the video a “national treasure” that must be protected.

He also praised Thomas Green, the original videographer, for capturing historical moments with his personal camera. The film, which was shown here in February, shows VI people, activities and natural scenery from 1947 to 1949. Mr. Green was the territory’s supervisor of education from 1943 to 1950.

In his welcome remarks, BVI London Office Director Kedrick Malone said that the video helps sensitise people to the historical events, places and people that helped shaped the way of life and culture of Virgin Islanders.
