Twenty-five alleged illegal migrants from Haiti were repatriated Wednesday morning, Communications Director Arliene Penn told the Beacon.

Ms. Penn said the 25 people were found on Virgin Gorda on Friday and then transported to Tortola and held at the detention centre at Her Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut.

There were 15 men, eight women, and two children in the group, according to the communications director.

No information was released on how they arrived on VG or where their final destination was.

The Virgin Islands is no stranger to human trafficking. The territory saw the danger of the activity in 2010 when a boat fleeing immigration authorities and carrying 30 Haitians crashed near Paraquita Bay, resulting in the deaths of at least eight people, including four children.

The captain of that boat, Roro Edourre, is serving a 10-year prison sentence here. His alleged co-conspirators, Lamorthe Delva and Dieuseul Mompremier, were arrested in St. Thomas in April and face prosecution in the US.
