Of the 257 students who took the territory’s school leaving exams, 224 students passed, a rate of 87 percent, Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn said Friday in the House of Assembly.

“Madam Speaker, these results have helped us to realise that our students are capable of performing at a higher academic level than we think,” Mr. Walwyn said. “They simply need a push in the right direction, care, love and nurturing.”

At the Elmore Stoutt High School, 153, or 85 percent of the total 180 seniors, passed the exam, Mr. Walwyn said. Eighty-eight ESHS students received Grade One certificates, the highest grade on the exam.

The top two scorers in the exams were both from ESHS: Makayla Maduro was first, and Divannia Hill was second, Mr. Walwyn said. He added that Tariq Maduro, also from ESHS, was the top-scoring male student.

At the Bregado Flax Educational Centre, 31 of 34 students passed the exam, including 25 who received Grade One certificates, Mr. Walwyn said.

At the Claudia Creque Educational Centre, three of the five students who took the exam passed. All three received Grade One certificates, he said.

At the Seventh-day Adventist Secondary School, all 18 students who took the exam passed with Grade One certificates, while at the St. George’s Secondary School, 18 of 19 students passed with Grade One certificates, with one student not passing.
