Jacob Edwards wants a job.

For the past seven months, the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College graduate has been trying to get one, he said. But although he has dropped off his resume at several businesses, he has had no luck.

“I had big expectations after graduation,” Mr. Edwards said on Thursday during a press conference at the Premier’s Office conference room.

The event brought together business owners, managers, government officials and young people who had signed the Youth Unemployment Register initiated recently by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

On Dec. 1, unemployed residents between the ages of 16-30 were invited to register at the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports. So far, 490 have complied, according to Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn.

Among them was Mr. Edwards, whose HLSCC degree is in general studies with a concentration in biology.

“As young people, they say we don’t want to work. I don’t agree with that,” Mr. Edwards said, adding, “We need to come together and see where things go.”
