During the coming holiday season, government plans to spend more than $700,000 on renovations and remedial works at 16 public schools in preparation for the new term, according to Government Information Services.

At various schools on Tortola and Virgin Gorda, planned works include the replacement of damaged windows, the remodelling of bathrooms, the drainage of flood areas, the tiling of classrooms, the repairing of a perimeter fence, the upgrading of electrical systems, and the installation of air-conditioning units and burglar bars, a GIS press release said.

At the Althea Scatliffe Primary School, a bus stand is to be constructed, and phase one of the existing electrical system is to be upgraded. At the Enid Scatliffe Pre-primary School, a new parking lot is planned as part of efforts to alleviate traffic congestion.

The Elmore Stoutt High School is to receive 30 new computers, and both ESHS and the Bregado Flax Educational Centre Secondary Division will receive a coin-slot photocopying machine for student use.

Meanwhile, the BVI Technical and Vocational Institute is to receive 30 computers and two network printers.

Later this month, the additional classrooms at the Jost Van Dyke School and the Claudia Creque Educational Centre Pre-school are scheduled to be completed, according to GIS.
