The 300-foot antenna that stood beside ZBVI’s Baughers Bay radio station since the late 1960s, withstanding several severe hurricanes, was brought down Saturday morning when an SUV crashed into one of its guide wires, station officials said.

Harvey Herbert, ZBVI’s general manager, said yesterday that the station was forced off the air for much of Saturday due to the accident. But with the help of a technician from St. Thomas and workers from the BVI Electricity Corporation, two 60-foot poles with ground wires were erected near the station to reestablish limited coverage, he added.

“It was hard work around the clock, but we’re on air now,” he said.

Mr. Herbert added that fully reestablishing coverage will require constructing a new tower, a process that could take at least six weeks.

“It’s going to take a while because it’s going to take a new antenna from the United States,” he said.
