The Virgin Islands government is a step closer to choosing a contractor for the multimillion-dollar expansion of the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, but officials haven’t given updates of the project’s estimated cost.

Deputy Premier Dr. Kedrick Pickering told the House of Assembly last Thursday that three of the five contractors previously shortlisted for the airport project turned in bids on March 15. He did not reveal the amount of the bids, but said that they were opened in front of the bidders and the Central Tenders Board, a government body that evaluates bids and makes recommendations to Cabinet.

Dr. Pickering said three firms bid on the project: the Cayman Islands-based Sir Robert McAlpine [Holdings]; the China Communications Construction Company; and a United States firm, The Walsh Group.

Two other firms — the US-based GLF Construction Corporation and a consortium of IDL Group [Canada] and the VI-based ADC Construction — were initially shortlisted but did not submit bids, Dr. Pickering said. He and representatives of the firms that withdrew from the bidding process did not respond to requests for comment for this article.
