Lorenzo Hughes’ business got a boost Friday night from an unusual source: hundreds of thirsty pirates.

The Jolly Roger Inn owner and 15 employees had three bars set up to tend to drink requests from the 200-to-300-member crowd, most of whom were costumed sailors participating in the 30th Interline Regatta. The annual event, which brought an estimated 300 sailors chartering 50 yachts to the territory, serves as a major revenue earner for tourism businesses like his, he said.

The regatta, hosted by The Moorings, brings down hundreds of airline employees each year to spend a week on the water, with a full schedule of racing events and parties.

Tanya Whistler, commercial director with Moorings parent company TUI Marine, said the event started off as an informal industry gathering but has since ballooned to include 21 airlines, she said.
