The Road Town Anti-Crime Group wrote to Premier Dr. Orlando Smith on Monday, calling for mandatory sentences for gun crimes and gun possession; the creation of a sex offenders’ registry; and higher qualifications for police officers, among other initiatives.

The group also wants an expert to audit the police force to determine its strengths and weaknesses and guide its “short-term and long-term reformation” into a more effective organisation, the press release said.

In the letter, the group called for a mandatory ten-year sentence for crimes committed with the use of a gun, and a five-year sentence for illegal gun possession and for gun trafficking.

Community policing programmes are also part of the group’s recommendations, as is cracking down on minor crimes such as destruction of property, littering and drag racing on public streets. Increase foot patrols and better lighting are also recommended.
