The several dozen potential jurors who attended the opening of the October Criminal Assizes Tuesday got a warm welcome from lawyers and Justice Indra Hariprashad-Charles, as well as a lengthy lecture on the jury’s role in dispensing justice.

The new term –- which is scheduled to address 30 criminal cases – was marked with a series of speeches from representatives of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and defence attorneys.

In this Assizes, the court is scheduled to hear 11 cases traversed from the previous sitting and 19 new committals, Ms. Hinds said. These include two murder cases; two attempted murder cases; one case of conspiracy to murder; and one case of death by dangerous driving, as well as several other cases involving sexual offences such as rape, indecent assault and unlawful sexual intercourse.
