An attempted-murder case being tried for the second time began at the High Court on Monday.

Matthew Hazel is accused of attempting to rob and murder an off-duty police officer who was depositing cash from One Mart’s daily earnings at a bank in Road Town on Feb. 16, 2015.

The virtual complainant, Sergeant Durville Carty, claims to have protected himself with his own firearm and shot the assailant during the attack.

Defence attorney Michael Maduro previously confirmed that the defendant’s first trial in November came to an end the day after it started because Justice Nicola Byer declared a mistrial.

Mr. Hazel has been hit with four charges in relation to the incident: attempted murder, attempted robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of explosives.

Detective Jumo Shortte testified on Tuesday, and shared CCTV footage of the incident with jurors.

In the video, a figure is shown approaching Mr. Carty after he stepped outside of his vehicle in the parking lot of FirstCarribean International Bank.

Mr. Carty and his assailant appear to exchange gunfire, and the figure flees the scene.

Another video recorded on the same night shows Mr. Hazel entering the waiting room at Peebles Hospital and collapsing into a chair.

Hospital staff members then assist Mr. Hazel into a wheelchair and take him out of the waiting room.

The defendant, who is represented by defence attorneys Valerie Stephens-Gordon and Mr. Maduro, is on remand.

The trial is expected to continue this week.
