Government has more than doubled its funding allocation for the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival for the event’s 50th anniversary, according to Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn.

This year $130,000 will be allocated for the April 15-17 activities, up from $60,000 in 2016, Mr. Walwyn said during a press conference last Thursday at Fischer’s Cove on VG.

Leaders also announced headliners for the golden jubilee celebration, who include Jamaican reggae singer Jah Cure, Trinidad soca artist Destra, and St. Thomas duo Rock City.

The festival will kick off on April 15 with a Cultural Food Fair at the VG Yacht Harbour and the annual Fishermen’s Jamboree based at Mermaid’s Dockside Bar & Grill, said Sasha Flax, chairwoman of the VG Easter Festival Committee.

Later that night, the Bernie Sprauve Festiville officially opens, with Jah Cure headlining the list of entertainers.

Ms. Sprauve, in whose honour the village is being named, is the only founding member of the VGEF who has not been publicly recognised during past festivals, Mr. Walwyn said.
Three other founding members will also be recognised this year: Rose Gardner, Andy Flax and Rupert Ephraim, who also attended the press conference.
