The BVI Reading Council plans to celebrate its 17th anniversary with a book fair that begins today, officials said.

The book fair is scheduled to be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and tomorrow at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall.

Council members hope to sell 1,000 books at the fair in order to promote reading, according to Government Information Services.

In addition to the books for sale, there will be a scavenger hunt, bingo games and word puzzles for children, and prizes will be presented to the student who has read the most books, according to GIS.

The book fair will be followed by the “2012 Adults All Star Spelling Bee” on Sept. 8 at the hall, which is also part of the council’s anniversary celebration.

The Department of Education is co-sponsoring the bee, according to GIS.

The organisers hope to sign up 10 three-member teams for the bee, though registration ended on Monday.
