A casual observer might have thought the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School students lined up in their playground recently were eagerly awaiting candy, toys or some other treat.

“They’re very enthusiastic about us coming,” said Kimberly Malone, senior library assistant and one of two Library Services staffers who travel to primary schools around Tortola so children can check out books.

Every two weeks throughout the school year, the Bookmobile visits 15 schools, including the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre. Purchased in 2006, the Bookmobile is lined with shelves, but also has a television so children can watch movies as they wait in line. The reading selections include popular series like Geronimo Stilton and Captain Underpants, as well as classics, non-fiction and youth magazines.

“We have it organised by reading level, so they can go to the appropriate shelf and choose the book they want,” Ms. Malone said.
