Residents should soon be able to power their homes with renewable energy after legislators amended the BVI Electricity Corporation Act during the House of Assembly sitting on Tuesday.

The amended law allows for individuals and companies to generate energy from nine designated sources: wind, solar, hydro, biomass, bio-fuel, landfill gas, sewage gas, geothermal energy, and ocean energy.

Residents were always allowed to use renewable sources to power devices such as water heaters, but the BVI Electricity Corporation was the only entity authorised to produce energy for the territory’s electrical grid. Now, licensed consumers will be able to sell excess energy back to the BVIEC.

The legislation received unanimous support from lawmakers.
