Lawmakers are scheduled to debate the approval of nearly $27 million in unbudgeted spending from 2012 when the House of Assembly resumes at 2 p.m. today.

The supplemental spending resolution is one of the two items left from a long list legislators have been debating over the past week. The other item is a proposal to authorise the government to acquire land for the construction of a pumping station in East End as part of the National Sewerage Project.

HOA members passed five laws during Tuesday’s sitting: the Pioneer Services and Enterprises (Amendment) Act 2014; the Arbitration (Amendment) Act 2014; the Securities and Investment Business (Amendment) Act; the Veterinary Act 2014; and the BVI Electricity Corporation (Amendment) Act 2015.

No debate was held for the proposed amendments to the first three laws.

Lawmakers expressed support for the Veterinary Act, which will establish a licensing framework and consequences for malpractice for the territory’s animal doctors.

“I was minding cattle from the age of 6,” said Opposition Leader Ralph O’Neal. “We had all local vets: We didn’t have any professional vets. The local vets did a good job and they helped a lot, but this bill was needed long ago.”
