The territory saw an increase in tourism earlier this year, with much of the boost coming from charter yacht bookings, BVI Tourist Board officials said Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference at The Moorings, Hadassah Ward, the BVITB’s director, said at a press conference at The Moorings that the charter yacht sector saw 157 more bookings than last season.  Industry and BVITB officials remain optimistic about the coming season, she said,

“It is our job to invite everybody here, and it is the job of everybody in the BVI to make sure they have a fabulous time when they come here,” Ms. Ward said.

During the press conference, the board’s chairman, Neil Blyden, announced additional marketing strategies it has in place to promote the territory over the next six months.

The BVITB will advertise with the New York-based radio station WBLS and the pan-Caribbean television network Tempo to promote the Virgin Islands as a tourism destination, Mr. Blyden said.
