Premier Ralph O’Neal recently congratulated Irwin LaRocque, the Dominica national who has been appointed the seventh secretary general of the Caribbean Community.

Mr. LaRocque, who previously served as the assistant secretary general for Trade and Economic Integration at the CARICOM Secretariat since 2005, assumed office on Aug. 15.

In a letter sent last week on behalf of the territory, Mr. O’Neal wrote, “You have demonstrated your commitment to serve the people of this region to the best of your ability.”

Mr. LaRoche has worked in the areas of economic integration, regional and international trade, foreign affairs and economic development, and as a public service officer, according to Government Information Services.

“These different experiences will serve you well and have more than adequately prepared you for this current appointment and any associated challenges,” Mr. O’Neal wrote.

The Virgin Islands has been an associate member of CARICOM since July 1991.
