What happens “when a man loves a woman?” You probably wouldn’t think to find out at Her Majesty’s Prison.

But on Friday, Prison Superintendent Richard Holder attempted to answer that age-old question, performing the R&B standard at the prison’s karaoke night.

Prison and police officers, along with other residents, came to eat, drink and sing in a building just outside the prison gates that’s usually used for officer training.

“Honest to God, this is my first time I’ve been here,” said Astrid Wenzke, when interviewed at the prison. “I heard Superintendent Holder speaking about it on the radio the other day, and I told my friend about it: I said, ‘Hey, let’s go to the prison on Friday night,’ and she said, ‘You’re crazy, or what?’”

But both Ms. Wenzke and her friend, Ann Syrette, said they enjoyed the event, where they sang a two-woman rendition of “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” Shania Twain’s denunciation of egotistical men.
