The Cayman Islands immigration system has come under fire for allegedly failing to process at least 800 permanent residency applications over the last three years.

According to the Cayman Compass, trust firm manager Mark Edmunds filed an application for judicial review last month against the territory’s Immigration Department, which still hasn’t processed a permanent residency application he filed in June 2014.

Mr. Edmunds’ legal challenge seeks to declare the government’s actions with regard to his residency application unlawful and “contrary to the principles of natural justice,” and asks the court to force the government to hear the residency application within two weeks of any order it makes relative to the case, the Compass stated.

In addition, the Compass added, Mr. Edmunds is seeking to recover the more than $26,000 he spent to file his permanent residence application, as well as interest costs accumulated over about 29 months.

Mr. Edmunds is reportedly arguing that the Cayman government’s actions contravene the territory’s constitution, as well as the European Convention on Human Rights.
