Residents and visitors alike gathered around to watch Cane Garden Bay students compete in flat races, bucket races and even a cheer competition Monday during Ivan Dawson Primary School’s annual Commonwealth Day celebration.

While some watched from inside the school grounds, others found shady spots where they could watch over the school’s wall.

As usual, the event started with singing and reading Queen Elizabeth II’s message. This year’s theme was “Opportunity through Enterprise,” and the monarch’s message encouraged people to follow their goals, especially those who can help others.

“As we reflect on how the Commonwealth theme applies to us individually, let us think about what can be gained with a bold heart, dedication and teamwork,” the Queen said in the statement, which was read out to students and parents. “And let us bear in mind the great opportunity that is offered by the Commonwealth – of joining with others, stronger together, for the common good.”
