Victor Mudho, 37, pleaded guilty to forgery and asked Magistrate Tamia Richards for mercy Monday, after being accused of using cheques taken from his former employer to buy groceries, baby supplies and a stereo.

Mr. Mudho, a Kenya national who had been employed as a maintenance worker at Voyage Charters at Sopers Hole, admitted to police that he took six or seven cheques from a box he found at the business, Senior Crown Counsel Christilyn Benjamin told the court. He signed them with a relative’s nickname and used them to pay for at least $995.65 worth of merchandise, she said.

“The reason he stole the cheques was out of a need to assist his family,” Ms. Benjamin said he told the police.
