Conservationists and policymakers have raised alarm in recent years that the Indo-Pacific lionfish represents a serious threat to coral reefs around the region. But the environmental policy problem could also present a lucrative business opportunity, a group of student entrepreneurs hopes.

“This is where we come in: Our business offers a solution to this pressing environmental issue,” Nia Douglas, a Cedar International School student, said in a presentation at The Moorings conference room Friday. “With the discovery of lionfish’s delectable taste comes the demand for the addition of lionfish to menus of higher-class establishments and resorts.”

Ms. Douglas and her fellow VI Lionfish Enterprises team members Raven David and Darissa Rogers were presenting at the BVI Business Outlook Business Development Competition.

The contest aims to test the business savvy of young people, teaching them what’s involved in creating an entrepreneurial idea, according to organiser Portia Harrigan.
