When Virgin Islands historian Dr. Angel Smith first heard about Foxy Callwood’s plan to build a traditional-style sloop at his Jost Van Dyke restaurant, he thought it couldn’t be done.

“I thought they had gone off the deep end,” Dr. Smith said Saturday at the launch ceremony for the Endeavour II.

The final product proved the historian wrong, and shows how the territory’s tradition of boat building, which dates back to at least the 1700s, has evolved.

“The Endeavour is a fine example of that traditional design, but then using modern methods,” Dr. Smith said.
