Perhaps the most visible sign of what’s being done at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College’s Paraquita Bay campus occurs each June when hundreds of graduates walk across a stage to claim their associate’s degrees.

But that image doesn’t reflect the full picture of the institution’s offerings, according to Dr. Derry Hodge, HLSCC’s dean of workforce training.

“There’s a workforce training division that has been in existence for years, and we’ve been doing things to enhance and ensure that we have a competent and well-trained labour force,” Dr. Hodge told a conference room filled with business leaders at Maria’s by the Sea on Friday morning.

The college held a “breakfast networking meeting” in order to foster connections with the private sector and promote the work of its Centre for Professional Development and Community Education, a unit that offers short courses, workshops and opportunities for personal enrichment, Dr. Hodge said.
