Many things have stayed the same in Elton Georges’ five years as complaints commissioner, but his office has managed to “nudge service standards in the right direction,” he told reporters during a press conference on Monday morning.

For example, the office has campaigned effectively to have departments and statutory boards write service charters and post them publicly, he explained.

He added that the office has also “had some success” with helping various agencies manage grievances against them, and that department heads and permanent secretaries in the public service have improved their own handling of complaints.

Mr. George said it has been “satisfying” to be able to assist “people who were at a complete end of the tether.”
