Jazz guitarist and singer Raul Midon will kick off H. Lavity Stoutt Community College’s 22nd Performing Arts Series on Nov. 19, said Linette Baa, who oversees the shows.

The November performance will be followed by HLSCC’s Christmas Concert on Dec. 10, according to the organiser.

In the past, the annual series began as early as September, but this year it was delayed.

“It started late this year due to lack of funding to get it done,” Ms. Baa said Tuesday.

The series, she added, could use more financial support from the business community.
“I know everyone is having a hard time, but I think we don’t want to see the arts disappear,” Ms. Baa said. “It’s very important to invest in the arts, especially for our young people.”
Each series costs between $80,000 and $100,000, according to the coordinator.

“The more expensive the artist, the more people get excited about the show,” Ms. Baa said, adding that more well known artists charge a lot more.
Ms. Midon, who is scheduled to open the series, may not be very well known in the Virgin Islands, “but just know that he is good,” Ms. Baa promised.
The jazz performer, who has entertained residents during the series in the past, is a twin who has been blind from birth.
