As the August Emancipation Festival gets into high gear, police are asking homeowners to be vigilant in securing valuables.

After several weeks of lower burglary numbers, there was a dramatic rise in recent days, with multiple burglaries in the Ballast Bay, Horsepath and Johnsons Ghut areas, according to a police press release.

In one case, an alarm system alerted a homeowner who came home and found a burglar on his premises, the release states.

Acting Police Commissioner Alwyn James is asking residents to be on the lookout for anyone suspicious driving a rental vehicle or walking around with tools such as crowbars, which are often used to pry open windows or doors, according to the release.

Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the police’s three-digit non-emergency number, 311, or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline number, 800-TIPS (8477).

Police also suggest planning in advance to properly secure valuables such as jewellery and electronic items. Homeowners are asked to inspect their premises and secure windows and doors, particularly those out of public view and more susceptible to break-ins.

The installation of alarm systems and external lighting is also encouraged.
