Police met with West End residents at Mount Carmel Baptist Church last Thursday night, pledging to step up community policing efforts and encouraging anyone with knowledge of crimes taking place in the territory to come forward.

“We want to make our presence be seen and felt,” said Patrick Harewood, the inspector in charge of the West End Policing Division.

Mr. Harewood’s division is making a commitment to increase foot patrols, he said. It is also working with Education and Culture Minister Andrew Fahie, who represents the West End area, to acquire two motor-scooters for officers to drive while patrolling, he said.

The police are also available to provide security advice and assessments of existing practices to businesses, Sergeant Tilda Henry-Lewis said at the meeting. Ms. Henry-Lewis advised residents to place valuables in their homes and vehicles out of sight. Computers and other electronic items, like iPods and cell phones, are often the targets of residential burglaries, Mr. Harewood said.
