After much debate in public and in a closed-door committee session, legislators passed the Service Commissions Act Tuesday during a continuation of last week’s sitting. The law governs the functions of three commissions: Public Service, Teaching Service and Judicial and Legal Services.

These bodies, according to the law, advise the governor on appointment, promotion, transfer, discipline and dismissal of public sector workers.

Former Public Service Commission member Irene Penn O’Neal (R-at large) said the bill addresses problems with the General Orders, adding that it might be overdue, but it is a good law.

“If we could only enforce these clauses, we would have a better and a more improved public service,” Ms. Penn-O’Neal said, adding that she supports the bill wholeheartedly.
