Some of them have been swimming for years, and others are still just getting comfortable in the water, but the weekly trip to the Nanny Cay pool for swimming lessons is a mix of fun, education and physical activity for the 20 or so BVI Services clients.

“I really enjoy it. Swimming is one of my hobbies,” said Colin Matthews.

Clearly a veteran in the water, Mr. Matthews, who uses a wheelchair to get around at the Road Town facility BVI Services shares with senior citizens, joked with the others in the pool in between laps.

At times during the morning, the giggles and games had to be stopped by instructor Annie Gardner, but her method was foolproof.

“Where are your ears?” she asked the group lined up against one side of the pool. As soon as they heard the question, the chatter died down, and the students faced Ms. Gardner to hear instruction about what the next activity would be.

Many of the swimmers are adults who have been swimming with Ms. Gardner since they were children.
