A public meeting to discuss the environmental effects of extending the territory’s cruise ship pier will be held at 6:30 p.m. today at Maria’s by the Sea.

The meeting will review the “possible impacts associated with the lengthening and widening of the cruise pier; proposed dredging and land reclamation in Road Harbour; and direct and indirect socioeconomic impacts related to the proposed development, among other areas,” according to Government Information Services.

Dr. Cassander Titley-O’Neal, whose firm Environmental Systems carried out an environmental impact assessment for the project last year, will present her findings at the meeting.

Last month, Cabinet members approved an agreement with Tortola Ports Partners to lease a portion of land adjacent to the cruise ship dock in exchange for a $60 million investment, which includes expanding the pier to accommodate larger ships.

The proposal is still awaiting the approval of the United Kingdom government.
