Alleging “flagrant” violations of the rules set out in the Protocols for Effective Financial Management, Julian Fraser (R-D3) is to make a motion for a vote of no confidence in the National Democratic Party government during the House of Assembly sitting scheduled to start today.

According to the order paper, which sets out the business to be covered in the sitting, Mr. Fraser’s motion alleges that the territory’s economy “is hopelessly tanking” and that “the government of the Virgin Islands has been experiencing harsh criticism from residents, including those in business, for its policies and practices.”

This is not the first time such a motion has been brought before the legislature. In 2003, then-Opposition Leader Dr. Orlando Smith asked for a no-confidence vote in then-Chief Minister Ralph O’Neal in the wake of allegations of corruption in the awarding of a telecommunications contract for the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport. The motion did not pass.
