Mocko jumbies entertain onlookers at the East End/Long Look Festival Parade on Aug. 7.

It was hot on Wednesday. August hot.  Eighty-two degrees Fahrenheit hot. And it probably felt a lot hotter still if you were one of the dozens of members of the Hugga Bunch troupe dancing in fits and spurts behind a flatbed truck broadcasting music.

“We’re talking about the dance floor,” a voice over the truck’s loudspeakers blared to the crowd. “That’s right, I want you to get down. I want you to whine down.”

The troupe’s temporary dance floor was a patch of pavement outside the East End Police Station where a sizable crowd had gathered to watch the East End/Long Look Festival Parade.

As the Hugga Bunch members — clad in gold and silver outfits adorned with bright yellow feathers that appeared as if they came from a relative of Big Bird —danced in the streets, the crowd replied with applause. The parade, which didn’t get fully underway until about 4:30 p.m., featured about 20 entries.

The parade was one of one of the final events in the three-day EE/LL Festival, which began on Aug. 5 hours after the August Monday Parade.
