The 10th Annual Great Festival Sloop Shoot-out and Heritage Regatta wrapped on Aug. 6.

The event featured two days of sailing in Road Harbour and a finish at Nanny Cay on the final day. This year’s event was deemed a “great success” by both the organisers and the participants, according to a H. Lavity Stoutt Community College press release.

In previous years, there was only one day of racing with the premier competing against the governor on August Tuesday in the Great Festival Sloop Shoot-out.

However, this year Premier Dr. Orlando Smith suggested that the event become more like a regatta.

All told, there were three races held on Aug. 3 and Aug 6.

Four of the territory’s wooden sloops participated in the event, including the 100-year-old Intrepid, which was acquired by HLSCC earlier this year with the assistance of sponsorship and government.

The premier was unable to compete in the race due to a “last-minute emergency,” but was represented by Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn.

Governor Boyd McCleary was also not able to compete, but was represented by Deputy Governor Inez Archibald. However, after “assessing the sea conditions” she handed over the helm to her deputy secretary, Vincent Wheatley.
