Employers who have not paid their National Health Insurance dues could be putting their employees at serious risk come next Monday.

Last week, the Virgin Islands Social Security Board announced it would be suspending NHI coverage for delinquent proprietors on Nov. 28.

Defaulting employers were all given the three-month non-payment grace period required by law, and warnings were sent to each, according to an SSB press release.

Since NHI came on stream in January, a “large number” of employers have failed to pay the appropriate dues, the report noted.

While suspended, employers will not receive NHI payments for any health care services, supplies or prescriptions.

“Employers are reminded that they not only have a legal but a moral obligation for their employees’ well-being,” the release stated.

The SSB urges employers and employees to contact the NHI office at 852-7870 to check their status and make arrangements for payments if necessary.
