Dogs aren’t just cute companions — they can be much more than that, said Jeffery Brown, standing in Queen Elizabeth II Park during a dog show and K9 exhibition that brought Police Week to a close on Saturday.

“People need to realise how smart canines and animals are in general, and how much they can help us — how much they help us all the time,” he added.

He should know.

Mr. Brown’s dog, Piper, a German shepherd trained in search and rescue, assisted police in finding a missing person in Josiahs Bay in February 2012.

“Eventually Piper led us to an abandoned farmhouse where the woman had slept overnight,” he said. “And then down to the ridge over the ghut just above Josiahs Bay plantation.”

Eventually, Sherene Peterson, a United States tourist suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, was found with her legs trapped between a rock and tree near lower Hope Hill after wandering away from the beach. Piper, who won first place in the police-hosted dog show Saturday, helped lead the rescue, Mr. Brown said.
