The years-long process of identifying, buying, shipping and installing a garbage incinerator that can process all the territory’s waste ended in the fourth quarter of last year, when “the new system officially came online,” according to the Solid Waste Department’s 2011 annual report. The report cites commissioning the incinerator as its major achievement for the year.

The report also touted repairs at the Pockwood Pond dump that updated the incinerator facility and “eliminate[d] the issue of flooding which has plagued the department in recent years.”

The end of 2011 also saw the department, which since has been renamed the Department of Waste Management, installing a new truck scale. Since the previous scale hadn’t operated since 2010, “the department was unable to ascertain the amount of waste generated during the year 2011.”
