Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn said he understands the concerns of opposition legislators and others about older and younger students mixing at Elmore Stoutt High School, and he plans to take steps to separate the junior and senior students on the current campus.

Mr. Walwyn was speaking in the House of Assembly Friday, when lawmakers voted unanimously to pass an amendment to the Education Act that would, among other changes, add an additional year to VI public education.

“You can possibly organise the campus where you have two entrances, where you can have a junior school one side and a senior school on the other side of the campus,” Mr. Walwyn said.

Lawmakers also introduced the Mental Health Act, a draft of which is expected to be published in government’s Gazette soon.

Opposition Leader Ralph O’Neal also tabled the Public Accounts Committee’s report on the cruise pier development. Fellow opposition member Andrew Fahie made a motion to debate the report that day, but the motion was defeated by government’s nine-member majority.

Premier Dr. Orlando Smith pledged that the 1,000-page report would be debated after members have had time to read it.
