Public comments gathered during an education summit on Saturday

will form the basis of a forthcoming “white paper” to be created by the Ministry of Education and Culture, according to Government Information Services.

The summit featured two segments. In the first, moderated by Judith Vanterpool, eight panellists spoke on challenges facing the education system; in the second, moderated by Dr. Charles Wheatley, seven panellists discussed solutions.

After each panel discussion, audience members were given an opportunity to speak.

Issues raised were various: secondary students who aren’t prepared for the transition to tertiary education; teacher competency; the use of technology in the classroom; the possible use of the CXC as the benchmark secondary examination; and entry-level job skills of high school graduates.

The Ministry of Education and Culture will continue to host similar meetings as it solicits community input, according to GIS.
