The Farmers’ Week celebration typically held each February has been cancelled this year, officials announced this month.

Government blamed the recent drought, which Chief Agricultural Officer Bevin Braithwaite said was the worst the territory has seen in five years.

“According to the Department of Disaster Management, up until September 2015 Tortola and Virgin Gorda only had 7.25 and 10.26 inches [of rain] compared to 20.81 and 19.99 inches, respectively, during the same period in 2014,” Mr. Braithwaite said, adding that these conditions “severely affected crops and livestock production” in the territory.

Officials said they have started planning to re-launch the celebration next year.
