Almost 400 gallons of fuel covered the street in Sea Cows Bay on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

An employee of VI Motors was refuelling a truck around 3:30 p.m. Monday when the spill occurred near the now defunct Dominos gas station, according to Station Officer Melvin Jeffers.

“It was a small accident,” Mr. Jeffers said, adding that when the worker was filling a tank he hadn’t realised that a valve wasn’t fully open.

“He was at the back of the truck and he noticed that the fuel gauge wasn’t moving,” Mr. Jeffers said. “Then he realised the fuel was spilling into the street.”

Initially, the incident was reported as a 1,000-gallon leak, but the station officer said he received a report Tuesday that it was about 395 gallons.

Fire and Rescue Services responded with a fire tender and one utility vehicle, and poured sand over the spill to absorb the oil before removing it, Mr. Jeffers said.

“The clean-up went well,” he added.
