Witches Brew used to be a swamp.

But now, at least part of it is home to a multi-sport court that hugs the shore behind the Youth Empowerment Project’s building in East End. The brightly coloured court was filled with children shooting hoops before and after an opening ceremony held Tuesday afternoon.

“Like the leaders and builders before us, this project that we’re celebrating today requires leadership, foresight, careful planning and philanthropy,” said YEP board member Joycelyn Murraine, who welcomed guests to the event. “Today is far from the beginning of this project. In fact, this early step has been years in the making.”

A volleyball net was stretched across the centre of the court as speakers made their way to the podium stationed around the three-point line on the end opposite the water. The occasion marked not only the opening of the new facility, but also YEP’s fifth anniversary.

“Together, as a group, we fundamentally transformed the lives of over 500 children in this community,” said YEP founder Dr. Henry Jarecki, who has provided the majority of the funding for the project. “And we have provided a sense of community and responsibility to all of them. It is, simply spoken, astounding.”
