The Virgin Islands government has officially started negotiations with a group called Tortola Ports Partners about extending the cruise ship pier by as much as 300 feet, officials said Tuesday afternoon during a signing ceremony.

Premier Dr. Orlando Smith, Communications and Works Minister Mark Vanterpool, and representatives from Tortola Ports Partners signed a document called a heads of understanding, which will “set the tone for future discussions,” said Rosalie Adams, permanent secretary in the Premier’s Office.

“This heads of understanding will be the platform on which both parties would be able, in confidence, to negotiate a possible binding agreement to take the impending cruise pier development forward,” Dr. Smith said, adding, “Both parties will now work closely and exclusively as far as is commercially reasonable to finalise this negotiation.”
