A recent annual report detailed serious problems at the Adina Donovan Home for the Elderly, including the inability to evacuate bedridden patients and an aging building that requires constant repairs.

In response to the growing needs of seniors in the Virgin Islands, government is moving forward with plans to provide an enhanced residential care facility to be constructed at Spooners Estate, according to Government Information Services.

The new housing community will offer nursing care and assisted living to seniors residing on the compound. Also included in the designs are a chapel, mini-mart, salon, gardening centre and recreational area, a GIS press release said.

“We recognise that the needs of today’s seniors are changing and we must be proactive,” Health and Social Development Minister Ronnie Skelton said. “This proposed community would provide a safe, engaging and comfortable environment where residents can live and interact with other. Additionally, they will have easy access to specialised nursing care.”
