The Ministry of Health and Social Development last week denied claims of open burning at the Pockwood Pond incinerator.

Residents had reported that the practice had resumed, but upon investigating with Incinerator Plant Manager Miguel Smith, ministry officials determined that no deliberate open burning was taking place at the facility, according to Government Information Services.

Mr. Smith noted, however, that there is still some decomposing organic waste at the dumpsite, which had produced methane that caused the garbage to catch fire.

The manager added that the incinerator has been operating so well that garbage no longer has to be incinerated on a daily basis.
