In spite of a hiring freeze in the public service,

62 previously unemployed youths reported to work last Thursday for the Ministry of Communications and Works’ new Apprenticeship Programme, according to Government Information Services.

The youths, who will be paid to work for a period of three months, applied for the position at the Feb. 9 job fair held in conjunction with the government’s Youth Unemployment Register programme, said Natasha Lettsome, the ministry’s information officer.

Of the 62 apprentices, 51 were assigned to the ministry’s departments and units, with the remainder employed by statutory bodies, according to GIS.

“They were placed according to their interests,” Ms. Lettsome said.

After the apprentices’ three-month term expires, others may get a chance to come on board, she added.
