Maps will be on display at the Central Administration Building on Wednesday in observance of Geographic Information Systems Day.

The government’s National GIS committee is hosting the exhibition in the CAB’s east atrium from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., according to Government Information Services.

The exhibit will be designed to show how various government entities use GIS technology.

To that end, maps will be provided by agencies including the Survey Department, the Conservation and Fisheries Department, the Department of Disaster Management and the Town and Country Planning Department.

GIS Day is a global observance held each year on the Wednesday of the National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week. It is designed to raise awareness about GIS technology and its contributions in the fields of science, technology, information and the humanities.

GIS is “a computer-based mapping tool that takes information from a database, such as location, streets, parcel number, buildings, terrain, and other physical elements and depicts them as visual layers,” according to a press release from government.
